MODERN LINESIDE ACCESSORIES CATALOGUE

Industrial units are also available in large sizes. but all conform to the 12mm depth to allow a uniform backdrop. This full-wall unit has a length of 12' making a large and impressive backscene. Ideal for placing as an end-on warehouse, as very little space is required between it and the perimeter fence. A similar unit is available with a fire door located in it.

When more space is available, you can really go to town with an industrial backdrop. This 12' unit has two roller shutter doors and are large enough for rail or lorry access as depicted here.

With the buildings and road surface in place, the unit will need fencing off securely to keep the hoodies out. The Chainlink Fencing Pack from Ten Commandments provides a realistic and flexible solution to this area as shown in the picture, (left top). More modern palisade fencing is manufactured by Knightwing and available from MSIM (see links page). It is a superb quality plastic kit that fits well into any modern scene and is shown to effect in the photo (left, below) behind the railway line. In this particular case, the space available between the backscene and fence was only around an inch in width. Which just goes to prove that size isn't important - it's what you do with it that counts.

An industrial facility with vehicle access usually displays warning hatching as shown here. This is to warn pedestrians that vehicles or fork trucks may appear at any moment and that the area must always be kept clear. It can be reproduced by using Ten Commandments self adhesive road markings cut to size - unless you have the patience to paint it in! Appropriate Health & Safety warning signs should also be displayed around the doorways of buildings - also available from Ten Commandments. The roller shutter doors are painted with Citadel Colour 'Boltgun Metal' which is the most realistic metal colour paint we have come across. When caught by light, the effect is to highlight all the 'ripples' of the doors as shown here.

With the basic area complete, now is the time to start thinking about detailing - and the actual function of the facility you are building. It is worth giving some thought to this aspect of the model, as realistic detailing will make a lot of difference. In this example a consignment of bricks have arrived in the lorry. Stacks of bricks are unloaded by the lorry's HIAB onto a pallet, which are then taken away by fork truck. Empty pallets are wheeled in with the hand-pallet truck for the next stack. For extra realism, the stacks of bricks should be shrunk-wrapped; this is achieved by wrapping each stack with a small piece of clingfilm. Add some figures - HIAB operator, fork truck driver and a yardman and a cameo scene has been created. The lorry is a Herpa model, resprayed and detailed by Livery Delivery. All the other items mentioned are available from Ten Commandments, apart from the clingfilm which we got from Asda! (Other supermarkets are available).

Many modern facilities use small add-on air conditioning units like this. Although very small, they are only provided to cool air to the management offices - the workforce just have to sweat it out on the factory floor! This Ten Commandments aircon unit is a fold up etched brass kit and looks extremely effective.

The ubiquitous wheelie bin is a common sight at most facilities for smaller rubbish items - large industrial plants will have large 'Biffa' type skips for commercial waste. The yellow line is the designated pedestrian walking route around a yard which sees a lot of vehicle movements. Note the Health & Safety signage and the pallet (dumped on the walking route ... tut tut). The drain comes from Ten Commandments and small items like this make a lot of difference to the end result. The macro photography has been rather unkind in this picture - it looked much neater than this to the naked eye!

Almost all facilities these days have CCTV cameras to watch over the yard. The Ten Commandments kit includes four cameras - two wall mounts like this one and two stand alone on pole versions for complete flexibility. The cameras may be positioned at any angle. The sign comes with the Health & Safety sheet. All the kits are whitemetal castings or etched brass and are easy to assemble using superglue and then painting to complete.

If you are modelling a distribution depot then these roll cage trollies are a must! Designed for rapid loading of lorries, they can simply be wheeled on to the vehicle and wheeled back off at the other end. They are used by supermarkets, the Post Office, shops and fast food restaurants amongst others. The model is a two piece kit - whitemetal base and the cage is fold-up etched brass. The base may be painted depending upon the user, or left as bare metal. The cage was painted as aluminium. We hope this project has been of use and inspiration for your modelling.
