PROJECT 1 - STATION DETAILING
The Eleventh Commandment is a Modelling Projects page, and is designed to show you how to get the best from lineside accessories in order to enhance the look of your own model. The techniques and examples shown are based on our own experience, together with tips and hints picked up from other modellers along the way. We do not claim to show you a definitive technique - simply a selection of ideas that work for us and we hope that they provide some inspiration and assistance for you too. We welcome feedback on these projects.

Our first project is Station Detailing, and features the new Station Pack (L95) from Ten Commandments. This article uses a small diorama as a base for this model in order to demonstrate how to get the best from the kit. The project has started here with the basics in place – road and railway first, followed by the station platform and then the footpath. (Platforms and footpaths by Metcalfe Models). A couple of vehicles placed around your layout will help with measuring up at this stage, and give a clear idea about available space.

The next step is to apply road markings – best to fit these whilst the working area is still clear of obstructions! Good quality self-adhesive road markings are available from Ten Commandments and come in a variety of packs, covering everything from white lines to zebra crossings; bus stops to disabled parking places.

With the basics in place, the detail can start to be added. The components in the station pack are white metal castings, and a separate sheet of stick-on signs is included. Paint the signs themselves in appropriate colours, and apply the various signs and fascias to the castings – PVA glue is recommended, as it allows plenty of time to position the sign before it sets. The pack includes detail for the car park including the ‘Pay Here’ skysign, price board, ticket machine, sets of cones, bus stops, vending machines, timetable boards and litter bins, plus small signs for notices such as ‘Have you paid and displayed’, Disabled Parking, and Notices.

A close up of the timetables, essential for even the smallest halt, plus the coffee machine and confectionary machine – neither of which actually dispense anything, so very prototypical! The litter bins are also included in the pack.

A nice cameo scene in it’s own right, and this simple collection will instantly set the scene and period on your layout before any trains come into view.

Two bus stops come with the pack, the perfect accompaniment for the road markings and the excellent range of modern buses from Corgi, EFE and Britbus etc. The Disabled Parking Bay sign should be positioned near the entrance, and may be used by anyone with a Disabled Badge, a Mercedes, a 4x4, people who are ‘far too busy to walk’, Police Cars and cashpoint cripples.

Additional signs are included and may be attached to the walls of your station. These include modern essentials such as CCTV, Wheelclamping and small notices.

Once the items in the pack are installed, add other bits of detail to enhance your model. Lampposts are available from Express Models (working) or Ratio (dummy). Modern station seats are available through Ten Commandments whilst realistic people are available from Preiser, Noch, and Faller.
